Gianna Robinson is a Certified Feline Master Groomer based out of Aliso Viejo, CA with over 7 years of grooming experience and 4 of those years spent grooming cats. She is in the process of opening the first CFMG owned, feline-exclusive grooming and boarding facility in Orange County. You can follow her on Instagram @fangandflower for content on her furry feline clientele, educational posts, as well as for updates on when her salon and boarding facility opens!

How long have you been grooming cats, and what led you to pursue CFMG certification?

I have been grooming cats for 4 years now, and my soul cat Lucifer (or as I lovingly called him ‘Flower’) was the reason I got into grooming cats. You see, I had never had cats growing up as my mother is severely allergic, but my husband and I got our first cat shortly after we got married and I fell in love with everything cats. I ended up learning how to groom dogs, but had this long-haired cat that I always kept thinking “man…he looks dirty but I don’t know the proper way to groom him” and thus started my research for a program that could teach me everything on how to groom my sweet boy and eventually I found the NCGI! Lucifer unfortunately passed away suddenly at 5 years old in January 2025, and he just missed me earning my CFMG in September 2025 but I dedicated my title and entire career to him because without him, I wouldn’t be the badass cat groomer I am today!

What changed the most for you after becoming certified?

I know it sounds cliché, but I truly gained so much more confidence in my abilities after attending PPI and earning my CFMG. A lot of professional groomers struggle with imposter syndrome and thinking that they’re never enough; I was certainly one of them and I still struggle with it to this day. Thanks to the NCGI, its comprehensive training program, and community full of people dedicated to improving the lives of cats and their owners alike, I can now put ‘CFMG’ at the end of my name and it reminds me that not only did I work hard to earn that title but that I deserve it. Having that confidence allows me to know my worth, which opens up the doors for me to charge appropriately for the expert level service I provide and attract a clientele that appreciates that service and the training it took me to get there.

What is one grooming or handling technique that made the biggest difference for you?

I think there’s not one specific grooming or handling technique that made me a better groomer or gave me better results, rather it’s the culmination of all the various ones and the knowledge of when to use each one that really made all the difference. In order to know which handling technique works the best, you have to go back to the basics of the different temperaments in order to maintain an stress-free service for the individual cat you’re working on. Not all handling techniques work on all cats, and that really is the key to turning a good groom into a great one.

What is one business shift that significantly improved your cat grooming services?

I think shifting to a one-on-one approach with no other pets in the facility (especially dogs!) has made a huge difference in maintaining an environment that cats, their owners, and their groomer can enjoy. I’m able to focus solely on the needs of the cat I’m working on without having the pressure of knowing there’s other pets waiting on me to be groomed. Plus, there’s less stimuli which makes it a lot easier for the cat to remain calm when they’re not over-analyzing their environment for potential threats.

What would you say to a groomer who is on the fence about investing in proper cat grooming education?

If you’re trying to decide whether or not this the right path for you, I would ask you two things. 1. Does your love for cats and all their little quirks run deeper than the deepest ocean trench? 2. Are you willing to learn everything about cats to help them to the best of your ability? Then pursuing your CFMG is absolutely for you. All you need is a deep love and passion for cats and their health and the drive to do whatever it takes to be the best of the best; it takes a lot of work and it’s not easy, but nothing ever worth having comes easy. Becoming a CFMG is my single greatest accomplishment and I wish I would’ve done it sooner.
